I got a 7-letter word (which doesn't work), but don't know how to apply it (and I tried all legitimate anagrams). I don't recognize the people either.

After anagramming the 7 letters, remember the 8th character.

I see the people it appears as three people with two men and a women in the center. This does not seem to help with the puzzle

It was a nice attempt, but I felt there were too many jumps required for this puzzle. Got the first step right off, figured out the 2nd, but there is nothing in this puzzle that will tell you the 3rd step is a to use a play on words. Good effort, but just one step too many for my liking.

Oh, *feh*. First of all, why was there an anagram? There was positively no reason not to put them in the right order. And second, as [23] says, that last step is random and needless.
