The quote "I have no respect for a man who can spell a word only one way." is attributed to Mark Twain. The idea however can be found in Marshal Brown Wit and Humor (1880) as “A man must be a great fool who can’t spell a word more than one way.”
Sounds more like Twain. Lincoln was a self educated lawyer, and wanted to be correct.
Since Google automatically spellchecks for you, there's little reason people can't use the "correct" spelling except laziness and trying to sound colloquial...

I never heard about that quote from him, and I have read alot about Lincoln.
